FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

REPORT TO THE JEFFERSON COUNTY LIBRARY BOARD

MARCH 9, 2009

Accomplishments of the Jefferson City Friends of the Library in 2008:

1.       The Friends of the Library held our annual book sale at the Community Center May 28-30, 2008.  We have set our 2009 sale dates as May 27-29, 2009.

2.      The Friends of the Library sponsored a Cardboard Boat Race July 26, 2008 at the Jefferson City pool to raise money for our building fund. As of December 31, 2008 the building fund had grown to $58,128.87.

3.      The Friends assisted with the Summer Reading Program in July by providing pizza for the participants.

4.      The Friends joined the Quality of Life Team as an Action Partner of the Jefferson County Building a Better Future strategic development program.

5.      Four memorial books were donated to the library in 2008 by the Friends.

6.      The Friends manned a booth at Ole Time Saturday in October to promote the Library and to promote reading to children.  This was our third year to have an Old Time Story Time Booth at Old Time Saturday.  Individuals from diverse backgrounds participated by reading stories to children and by giving out donated pencils, bookmarks, etc.   This year we also provided information to the public about our efforts to encourage Jefferson City to build a new city library as part of the City Center.

7.      The Friends of the Library Board has kept the City informed about our Friends of the Library Quarterly Meetings.  We have been focused this past year on promoting to the community and the City Council the need for a new library building in Jefferson City. The Friends of the Library devoted considerable time and effort attending City Council meetings and working with city council members to promote inclusion of a new library building as part of the proposed City Center.  In response to our efforts, the City Council has passed a resolution of support that states that “at such time that the City can do so in a fiscally responsible manner, it is the intent of this Council to build a new library building on the City Center site. We also would like to express our appreciation to the Jefferson County Library Board for your “Resolution Supporting a New Library in Jefferson City.”  It is our conviction that for this dream to become a reality that it will require the full support of all stakeholders and we receive your support and encouragement with gratitude and humility.

8.      The Friends have established a Building Finance Committee to oversee fund-raising activities and are working closely with Tom Taylor of Maryville who successfully chaired a similar project.

9.      The Friends have developed a Friends of the Library web page at jcfol.com.

10.  During 2008, several individuals have contributed volunteer service to the library.
